Until the last moment it was uncertain whether Placido Domingo would be able to sing. He did, but was still clearly suffering from the effects of 'flu on the first night, and he apparently had the text run as subtitles behind the footlights to lighten the burden of singing in German. I caught the fourth performance on January 31 but saw no sign of them nor of the tenor watching his personal autocue [...]. He was in good vocal form, producing many memorable phrases, and with a legato that would probably have met with Wagner's approval, even if it was not quite in accord with modern ideas about singing German.
Domingo surfaces again as the hero of Pioneer's first-rate Lohengrin from Vienna, superlatively conducted by Claudio Abbado. Though on the drab side visually (wimples and lots of safe monochromes), it boasts Cheryl Studer as an impassioned Elsa, never less than a joy to hear - a reminder of just how inappropriate Karan Armstrong is in the role for Philips. Domingo brings an exotic, even sensuous flavour to Lohengrin - this knight does, indeed, come 'from a long way away'. As John Steane says in his invaluable new book, Voices, Singers and Critics (Duckworth, £25), Domingo's is 'the lover's voice'
