Eugene Onegin, Tel Aviv 09/05/64
Alfred Frankenstein, Opera Magazine, December 1964
Tel Aviv. The new season of the Israel National Opera was inaugurated with Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, staged for the first time in Israel and sung entirely in Hebrew, even by the many foreign guests. Impressive settings by Y. Goldman and the dynamic personality of the conductor, Georg Singer (by temperament particularly fitted to Slavonic music), raised the performance beyond the accustomed standard here. While the weak points of the production were the wretched orchestra and the provincial staging (by Edis de Philippe) - particularly in the two ballroom scenes - one could rejoice in some of the soloists, first of all the tenor Placido Domingo, whose winning stage personality together with his lovely lyrical voice made Lensky the outstanding figure on the stage.
