The Bolshoi Theater’s Plans for Future
The Bolshoi Theater company leaves its main stage on July 1 for the period of reconstruction. Till March 2008 it will give performances on the New stage. Much more new productions will be shown. In keeping with the theater’s policy, the bulk of premieres in the next season are works by Russian authors. Traditionally the theater has planned many tours.
The theater’s trips about Russia and abroad will begin in July. In summer the opera company and orchestra will take part in international festivals in Lyublyana in Slovenia, in Dalhalle in Sweden and in Athens in Greece. In 2006 the opera company will perform in the United States on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. The ballet company will give performances in the Metropolitan Opera this summer, later it will tour South Korea, Belgium, Great Britain and Japan.
The first of the next season’s three premieres is Mozart’s “Magic Flute”. In 2006, mankind will mark Mozart’s 250th birthday. The opera will be staged by director Gram Vick and conductor Steuart Bedford from Great Britain known for their opera productions of Mozart. The second premiere is Sergei Prokofiev’s opera “War and Peace” after Lev Tolstoy’s novel, the musical production will be supervised by Mstislav Rostropovich. The third premiere is Tchaikovsky’s opera “Yevgeny Onegin” staged by Dmitry Chernyakov.
There are 32 ballets in the repertoire of the Bolshoi ballet company on the New stage. Three premieres are forthcoming. The first one is expected in November: two one-act ballets will be shown—-“Class-concert” and “Carmen-suite”. They were staged in Russia earlier but performed during the company’s tour. Those ballets are the glory of the Bolshoi Theater. In February the ballet company will show an entirely new variant of Sergei Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” staged by Yury Posokhov, one of the most talented young choreographers, he works in the United States. The cycle titled “All Shostakovich’s ballets” will be continued; and Yury Grigorovich’s production of “The Golden Century” will be resumed.
